The first step of theology must be extended and rigorous exegesis. The results of this exegesis, whether we like them or not, must be incorporated into our doctrine. Pre-existing doctrine can drive us back to our exegesis to ask whether our exegetical method is valid, but we must not modify our exegetical method simply because we do not like our conclusions.
